DPI metadata is not image detail.
A digital image is made of pixels. Its embedded DPI or PPI value is a print instruction that suggests how densely those pixels should be placed on paper.
Changing 72 PPI to 300 PPI without changing the pixel dimensions does not create extra detail. It only changes the suggested physical print size. PixGauge therefore shows both the metadata and the image's actual pixel dimensions.

DPI and PPI FAQ
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI means pixels per inch and describes digital image resolution at a physical size. DPI means printer dots per inch. People often say DPI when they mean image PPI.
Does changing DPI improve image quality?
No. Changing only the embedded number does not add pixels or detail. Higher-resolution source pixels or careful resampling are needed to create a genuinely larger image.
Is 300 DPI good for printing?
Yes. 300 PPI is a common target for close-viewed photo prints. Around 150 PPI may still look good for posters or larger pieces viewed from farther away.
Why does my image have no DPI value?
Many images—especially web downloads, screenshots, and exported files—contain no usable resolution metadata. That is normal. Pixel dimensions still let you calculate suitable print sizes.
