How pixels become print dimensions

inches = pixels ÷ PPI
pixels needed = inches × PPI

A 3,000-pixel-wide image printed at 300 pixels per inch is 10 inches wide. The same image at 150 PPI is 20 inches wide, but each inch contains fewer pixels.

CHOOSING A RESOLUTION

What PPI should you use?

300 PPI: A common target for high-quality photographs and artwork viewed up close.

240 PPI: Very good quality for many photo prints, with a little more physical size from the same pixels.

150 PPI: Often suitable for posters and larger prints that are normally viewed from farther away.

The right value depends on the image, printing process, viewing distance, and your quality expectations.

How do I convert pixels to inches?

Divide each pixel dimension by the intended PPI. For example, 3,000 pixels divided by 300 PPI equals 10 inches.

How many pixels do I need for an 8 × 10 print?

At 300 PPI, you need 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. At 240 PPI, you need 1,920 × 2,400 pixels. At 150 PPI, you need 1,200 × 1,500 pixels.

Does a higher PPI make a smaller print?

Yes, when pixel dimensions stay fixed. Packing more pixels into every inch creates a smaller physical print with denser image information.
